In Part 1, I provide in-depth details about the rarely discussed connection between the heart and stomach. This is a crucial, yet mostly ignored by health practitioners, anatomical and physiological connection. Bear in mind, stomach problems increase the risk of heart problems and vice versa. Stomach problems can cause shortness of breath, angina-like chest pains, heart palpitations and irregular heartbeat. Heart issues can hamper blood flow to the stomach, which, can lead to gastric hyperacidity, chronic acid reflux, chronic indigestion and stomach ulcers.
The heart-stomach connection also impacts the emotional body as well. In many traditional healing systems, the heart is considered to be the center-point of the emotional body. Of course, it is associated with the Heart chakra and, in Chinese medicine, it is considered to be the lower house of Shen (i.e., spirit).
On the other hand, many people experience their emotions in their stomachs. One of the differences between “nervousness” and anxiety is that while the former is felt primarily in the nerves and muscles, the latter is often felt primarily in the stomach. Of course, the stomach is the seat of nurturing. In Chinese medicine, the stomach is associated with the Earth element and thus, central to both nutriment (all natural foods come from the Earth) and grounding. When one was unnurtured as a child or feels unnurtured in their contemporary existence, the stomach, on a physical level, is often negatively impacted.
Commonly, emotional issues affecting the Solar Plexus chakra (with which the stomach is associated) are the direct result of emotional wounding of the Heart chakra, and vice versa. It is important to note that the breasts, the infant’s essential source of life-sustaining nutriment are situated on level with the heart. Breast-milk enters the child’s stomach providing, not only nutriment, but comfort and satiation on a deep, emotional, mother/child connection level.
The Fire/Earth Cardio-Gastro essential oil blend is not intended to work directly on the heart and stomach organs. Rather, it is designed to help transform the flow of chi (vital force) along the Heart and Stomach acupoint meridians, thus, encouraging a more balanced bioenergetic context for the both the biophysical and psychospiritual operations of the associated organs. Therefore, given what has just been discussed, you can begin to see the potential value of this blend on a deep, psychospiritual level. In fact, in this modern, impersonal, emotionally treacherous, spiritually estranged era during which 70% of the U.S. food supply consists of abominable, ultra processed foods, this blend has a great degree of relevance.
In Part 2 of the recording, I demonstrate techniques for relaxing the diaphragm, and the tissue tension in the epigastric regions (upper abdomen, below the ribs).
This, in and of itself, can aid digestion and breathing, and release nervous tension. However, it can also be used to prepare the area for following with the “stomach pull-down” technique, which I also demonstrate. The stomach pull-down technique helps pull the stomach away from the diaphragm. This reduces tension in both stomach and heart, improves digestion and breathing and may prove useful for chronic acid reflux. It is also a valuable technique for those who have a hiatal hernia. Did you know that 55-60% of adults over 50 years old have a hiatal hernia (a condition characterized by a weakening of the diaphragm muscle fibers that allows part of the top portion of the stomach to move upward into the chest). All of this is explained in Parts 1 and 2 of the recording.
Finally, the recording concludes with a discussion of what may be one of the most important supplements many people will ever use: Betaine Hydrochloride with Pepsin. In a nutshell, by the time adults reach 40 years old, their stomach’s begin producing less hydrochloric acid. By 60 years old, they are hydrochlorhyrdic, meaning that their stomach’s are not producing enough hydrochloric acid (HCl) to digest their dietary proteins. Importantly, HCl is also required for the assimilation of vitamin B12 and most of the major essential minerals including calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc. Low HCl is also a common factor in the development of gallstones. Additionally, HCl is an important component of the innate immune system. Remember, 80% of the immune system activity is in the gut. Hydrochloric acid is required to kill any bacteria that are ingested with food. Low HCl levels encourage internal bacterial infections.
By the time most adults reach 80 years old, their stomachs are not producing HCl at all. There is a condition called B12 dementia, a form of dementia due to B12 deficiency (B12 is required for healthy nerve function; the brain is comprised primarily of nerve tissue). As HCl is required for the assimilation of calcium and magnesium, low stomach acid is also a factor in the development of osteoporosis.
Betaine Hydrochloride with Pepsin is supplement that provides HCl and the pepsin (the stomach’s protein-digesting enzyme that HCl activates) to replace the acid that the stomach is no longer producing. I take it with every meal and it makes a very big difference for my digestion. There are many brands available. I personally use Doctor’s Best Betaine Hydrochloride with Pepsin because it also contains gentian bitters. Gentian root is one of the herbs that has been used for hundreds of years as a tonic bitter. Tonic bitters stimulate digestive secretions in the stomach and small intestine.
