The ancients considered laurel to be a sacred plant. So much so, that in Rome and Greece it was illegal to put it to any profane use. In Greek and Roman civilizations, it was a symbol of achievement and triumph. The tree (one of its common names is Noble Laurel) became a sign of glory, honor and greatness.
Laurel has long been used in herbal medicine, the medicinal parts being the leaves, fruit and oil—all of which have excitant, antiseptic, regenerative and narcotic properties. Laurel leaves are used as rubefacient to treat skin and rheumatic conditions. They are also diaphoretic, and in large doses, emetic.
On an emotional level, laurel oil is described as being specific for: fear; depression; obsessional states; anticipatory anxiety; lack of self-confidence; lack of self-esteem; self-imposed limitation due to self-doubt regarding intellectual abilities and capacity for achievement; repression. Laurel is thought to enhance courage, confidence, bold and inspired creativity and self-pride.
