Litsea has long been used in the herbal medicine of India, China and southeast Asia. In Chinese medicine (the root, stem, leaves and fruits of the plant are all used) litsea is used to treat travel sickness, to dispel internal wind and cold (including chills) from the body and to control swelling and pain (including headache and lower back pain). It has also been used to treat tumors.

In general, litsea as an herbal medicine exerts anti-inflammatory, carminative, expectorant, sedative and vasodilating (hypotensive) actions
