Guaiac Wood Materia Medica

$5.00

Guaiac wood oil is distilled from one of three sources: Guaiacum officinale, Guaiacum sanctum, Bulnesia sarmienti. All three of these are related species of the Zygophyllaceae family (the Caltrop family which also includes the creosote bush). All three species are commonly referred to as guaiac and to a lesser extent as Lignum vitae meaning “Wood of Life” (it is also called “Tree of Life”). Additionally Guaiacum sanctum means “Holy Guaiac” and Bulnesia sarmienti is also known as Paolo Santo or “Holy Tree.”

Bulnesia sarmienti, a South American tree with a resinous heartwood native to the dry interior regions of Argentina and Paraguay, is at this point in time by far the most common source of the guaiac wood oil used in aromatherapy. Nevertheless, Guaiacum officinale and Guaiacum sanctum are much better described in the botanical and herbal literature and are used in the preparation of the homeopathic remedy Guaiacum and so are better qualified to serve as the focus of this discussion whose purpose is to elaborate the soul-nature
of guaiac wood oil.
