Aging and the Dangers of Sarcopenia
Sarcopenia, age-related muscle loss, is something most people may not be familiar with, but it is nevertheless a major threat to the well-being of millions of older folks. The average person loses 30% of his or her muscle mass by age 60. 20% of the people who suffer from sarcopenia are over 70. 80% are over 80 years old. As we all know, strong muscles are necessary for being able to efficiently move around and perform a variety of necessary daily tasks. Muscles move the bones. Without the muscles to move it, a bone is an inanimate mineral structure, like those of an ancient skeleton unearthed by archaeologists. Strong muscles are also required to maintain healthy posture.
